Some of our favorite foods causes uncomfortable heartburn and increases stomach acid to cause you even more discomfort. The food may taste delicious at the time, but when it comes back to haunt you it doesn’t feel or taste so great. Foods that can cause heartburn should be left off your grocery list.
The biggest culprits are, of course the good stuff like pizza, spices, bananas, chocolate and more of our favorites. No more banana splits because some dairy foods rich in fats can also cause you heartburn. If you are thinking hot milk or milk to calm your stomach, be careful because whole milk will give you heartburn. If you love lots of butter on your morning toast, even trying to be healthy and using margarine can give you heartburn and in actual fact, margarine is not as good for you as butter, it has so many more additives.
Fatty meat and greasy foods are terrible for heartburn. If you love that fast food it doesn’t leave much to enjoy when you start to suffer. If you are really trying to make a go of your diet and you suffer from heartburn, you will have to find an alternative to mayonnaise and salad dressings, now what does that do to your salad? Tomatoes and tomato products may also cause heartburn. More foods that cause heartburn are citrus fruits and grapefruit. Alcohol and peppermint tea, or just peppermints, caffeine, even if you try decaf, there is still some caffeine remaining and you will feel it if you suffer greatly from heartburn.
What happens here is, foods that cause a disturbance in the digestive system slows down the digestion and the food remains in your stomach longer, increasing the pressure and allowing reflux of the stomach contents. Chocolate on the other hand, contains certain compounds that occur in plants such as cocoa, tea and coffee, these plant compounds relax the oesophageal sphincter muscle giving the acid access to return up to the esophagus.
If you eat foods that cause heartburn, then you should consider changing your diet and seeing if it makes a difference to your discomfort. Any or all of the above foods mentioned can cause heartburn, if consumed in small quantities it could relieve the symptoms and discomfort somewhat. The easiest way to determine which foods give you heartburn is by process of elimination.
Process of elimination means you will start by cutting out all of the foods that could give you heartburn. Then, one by one you bring them into your diet. If things go along fine with the first couple and you don’t experience heartburn, then obviously those are not the cause of your problem. Keep adding the various possible causes to your diet until the one that gives you you grief surfaces. From then on, you eliminate the foods that cause heartburn from your diet. Keep going with the rest of the list until you have finished; there might be others that also cause you discomfort that you can easily dispose of.
Everyone is different so different foods cause heartburn to different people. It isn't easy to stop eating things you enjoy, but if your pain gets bad enough it is worth it. One thing you don't want to do is starting taking over the counter medications. These only give temporary relief and could have side effects. If you need medication search out the herbal remedies.
