Heartburn Diet - watch what you eat

Tired of heartburn? It seems like everything you eat makes your throat and stomach hurt. You don’t want to starve, but what can you eat that will be stomach safe? Allow me to give you a guide to a delicious and heartburn free diet.

First of all let’s talk about what a meal is. Research says that it is better to eat smaller meals that occur more often. Think of your stomach as a boat that you weigh down with a big meal. Sooner or later stomach acid is going to be sent up for help so it can empty that boat. Timing is also important with meals because if you eat and then lay down for bed, you are going to have your food come crashing back out of you like waves.

Now that we have our eating habits in order, let’s go over the naughty before the nice. Here are the foods we should definitely not include in our heartburn diet. Remember we are trying to avoid a heartburn sour aftertaste. Stay away from candy canes, chocolates, coffee, and fried foods. Steer clear of the famously spicy foods such as Mexican dishes, Chile and black peppers. If you love Italian food, you will have to go without garlic, onion, tomatoes, and tomato sauce. What is there left you ask? I am sure you can find a wonderful Italian dish that compliments a heartburn diet.

Fatty foods stay in your stomach longer so they tend to cause stomach acids to splash there way out of the stomach.

In the citrus category, we have the lovely oranges, orange juices, and grapefruits that should never be consumed on an empty stomach. The high acidic content of these fruits are likely to eat away at your lining and cause heartburn. The same rule of thumb applies for Alcohol. Avoid drinking an alcoholic beverage on an empty stomach. Other drinks to leave behind are soda pops, coffee, and caffeinated tea.

Food related antidotes for heartburn. Sour ball candies not only take the awful sour taste out of your mouth from the heartburn, but they neutralize those acids that created the heartburn. Gum also neutralizes acids, so they make great after dinner thoughts.

Finally, the foods that make it on your heartburn diet. There is nothing better than a nice piece of broiled chicken. Add some sweet potatoes and a vegetable and you have yourself a good meal. For breakfast, toast and cottage cheese with non-acidic fruit might be a good way to say good morning. A high fiber diet has been shown to reduce the likelihood of heartburn. You can wash it down with a little decaf tea, water, low fat milk, or non-acidic juices.

After a meal, it is advised to drink a generous amount of water. It will help keep those stomach acids at bay. Be healthy in your choices for a heartburn diet and you will be flooded by the benefits. Remember water is the best heartburn diet, because it extinguishes the fire.
