Home Treatment for Heartburn
Preventive Home Treatment for Heartburn
Heartburn is a common complaint. Even though its name suggests that it affects the heart, heartburn is a digestive tract problem. The name ‘heartburn’ is derived from the fact that the discomfort is felt in the chest around the area of the heart. The medical term for heartburn is non-cardiac chest pain or pyrosis.
Heartburn results from the backwash of stomach acid from the stomach. The acid goes into the esophagus causes irritation. Backwash from the stomach should under normal circumstances not occur but it does sometimes because of the opening of the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter). The LES may be weakened or be subjected to undue pressure from stomach contents which cause it to open.
It is a good idea to find an appropriate home treatment for heartburn because the constant backwash of stomach acid in to the esophagus can cause serious damage which may lead to more serious problems.
The best home treatment for heartburn is prevention. Heartburn is mainly caused by the food we eat and the kind of life we lead. Foods such as oily deep fried foods, spicy foods, carbonated drinks, caffeinated drinks, chocolate and citrus foods will cause heartburn. Eating huge meals, lying down soon after a meal, bending over and wearing tight clothing put pressure on the sphincter muscle causing it to open.

Yoghurt is another home treatment for heartburn. Previously, fresh milk was suggested as a remedy for heartburn. The milk would cause immediate relief but would later make the heartburn worse due to the increase in production of stomach acid to digest the milk. Yoghurt has been found to be a better remedy as it contains good bacteria. Buttermilk is also said to be an excellent remedy.
